Luong in her school’s new library with a new favorite book, Tips For You To Enjoy Reading
Setting up the child-friendly library is one of the greatest improvement steps at our school. I really like our library!
Until recently, Luong’s school did not have a library. All she had to read at school were textbooks and some student newspapers. At home, she sometimes borrowed her cousin’s books to read in her free time, but reading was not her habit. Her study result was very average. Her daily routine was going to class and back home with textbooks and homework. Sometimes, her teacher asked her to tell a story in front of class but it was hard for her to makeup new stories on various topics since she wasn’t reading.

When she heard about her school starting a Child-Friendly Library with help from YWAM Mercy Vietnam, she eagerly volunteered to support the librarian and teachers in arranging the decorations and books to create an attractive reading environment. During the time she was working at the library, she had chance to read interesting books. She finds reading at the library so peaceful and comfortable. She likes reading science and humorous books.

On a recent visit to the library she discovered the book Tips for You to Enjoy Reading. She read it again and again because the reading tips were so funny. Such as, “Reading makes us grow faster than eating soup”. This is her most favourite quote in the book. Aside from the humor, it impressed on her the importance of reading books. Her classmates are also eager to have library time during the school day.

I hope, we have more reading time and more good books in our library. We can have relaxing times of reading in our library after the hard lessons like math.
Converting a small room into a child-friendly library with green grass carpet, nice bookshelves and a lot of interesting books has made all the teachers and students in the school happy. They can enjoy reading time in the library or even in the school corridor or school yard. Reading has become part of the school culture and part of the student’s routine. Reading is enhancing their ability to learn and bringing them wonder and joy.
