Good news came in August 2017 for the 20 children living in our Phu Chau Children’s Home when the city of Hanoi approved the Home renovation plan. Renovation, which is now underway, is being made possible through donations from the German Embassy and Kneipe (an German gaming club in Vietnam.)

A fundraising event at the German Embassy took place in April. The Kneipe Club cooperated with the embassy and several German companies in Vietnam to gather community members to rally around the children in their need for an updated facility. At the event, the children from the Phu Chau Children’s Home had the chance to perform, sharing their talents in singing and dancing. This event also received coverage by television and print media outlets like VTV4 and Nhan Dan.

We were really happy to see local leaders in Phu Chau take the lead in the process of arranging for the renovations. They completed legal procedures, assembled a community supervision team, and contributed to the project in-kind and in cash. The community supervision team will oversee all aspects of the construction to ensure high-quality and adherence to the plan. A formal training course on how to supervise construction projects was delivered for the community supervision team, Board of Management, and Home staff by YWAM’s construction consultant.

We expect construction to be complete by middle of October, weather permitting. When done, the children will enjoy freshly tiled floors, newly plastered and painted walls, new bathrooms with modern German sanitation equipment and new toilets.  A new storage area as well as a fully functional kitchen with a new kitchen breezeway that is more convenient for cooking and preparing meals is also part of the plan.

In order to keep the children in safe during construction, we have moved them into the dining area. When the other rooms are completed the children will move back into their normal living area and then the dining room and kitchen can be worked on.

We are excited to see the progress day-by-day and are looking forward to seeing our new home completed.
