Vietnamese Grading System
Grades are based on average marks in all subjects. Maximum mark is 10.0, minimum is 0.
Excellent level: 8.0 – 10.0
Good level: 6.5 – 7.9 [Note: to receive “good” level, no mark in any subject can be under 6.5.]
Fair/Average level: 5.0 – 6.4
Poor/Weak level: under 5.0
If student is weak or poor, it means they have to take the exam again. If they do not pass the exam, they have to repeat that class.
What Goes Into the Grade?
#1. written test (15 minutes) X 4
#2 oral test X 1
#3. written test (45 minutes) X 4 or 5
#4. Semester examination X 1
Average mark of a subject = [(average mark for #1 + 2)*1 + (average mark #3) *2 + (mark of #4) * 3] / total number tests & exams
Average mark of a semester = sum of average marks of all subjects / number of subjects
Average mark of a school year = (average mark of 1st semester *1) + (average mark of 2nd semester *2) / 3
The total subjects at Secondary Level, for example, is 14 subjects or more and in a year each class has about 20 tests!
